Features of MP3 Players

Cashing in on the tremendous popularity of MP3 players, manufacturers are constantly launching new models into the market. With different features and different prices for each model, buying an MP3 player can be very confusing. Here is some information on MP3 players that can help you make a more informed decision if you intend purchasing an MP3 player.

Portable audio players are essentially of two different types- hard drive and flash memory. Portable CD players are also available but their popularity is on the decline because of inherent audio skipping problems.

One of the biggest differences between hard drive and flash memory MP3 players is their capacity of storage. Hard drives typically have a much larger storage capacity and should be your player of choice if you are looking to store lots of songs on your MP3 player. However, hard drives are prone to audio dropouts and skipping, which is their biggest drawback. CD drives do not have such a severe problem and there are huge improvements being made all the time.

On the other hand, flash memory MP3 players are very consistent and stable, no matter how demanding the conditions may be. The main reason for this is the absence of any moving parts or audio files.

Hard drive as well as flash MP3 players are capable of being used for audio playback as well as for storing data. You can easily make your computer data more portable by transferring it on to your MP3 player. The MP3 has a larger storage capacity, which means you can store much more files. The flash player typically has a storage capacity of about 4 GB. The hard drive can store up to 100 GB.

File Formats

Almost all portable audio players can play MP3 files, but they are also several other types of file compression formats that are available for audio files. Apple iPod employs the AAC format whereas several others use WMA files. The advantages that both these formats offer over the MP3 are smaller file size and better sound quality.

Though it is possible to convert audio files from one format to a different one, it can get pretty irksome. To avoid this unnecessary bother, make sure that the portable audio player you buy supports the format that you use most often.

Other Features

The navigation system present on an MP3 player is another factor to be taken into consideration. Over time, you are likely to end up having thousands of songs on your hard drive. It is important that you should be able to find any particular file easily without having to scroll down a never-ending list. A player that features simple controls along with a screen that is easy to read can help you find songs faster and more easily.

Some of the optional features you are likely to find in several portable audio players include:

* FM radio

* In-built microphone, which is useful for voice recording

* Outputs, which help connect the home stereo system to the portable player

* Color displays that enhance the experience when viewing art or photographs

* Video playback

Making a list of the features you are most likely to use will help you in choosing the MP3 most suited for your needs.
